JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - It’s up to a jury to decide whether a former Carteret County Police Chief is guilty of murder.
Prosecutors say George Hayden gunned down his girlfriend’s husband more than 30-years ago.
Closing arguments were made in an Onslow County courthouse today but no verdict yet in the trial of former police chief George Hayden.
The judge dismissed jurors until Monday.
For Denise Fitta the tension is almost too much to bear.
Fitta testified for the prosecution yesterday about the night prosecutors say hayden killed bill miller.
“The night that bill was murdered, how he came over, and had dinner with us, how he , sorry i get emotional cause it was the last time we’d see him,” she said.
Prosecutors argue that Hayden was involved in a love triangle with miller’s wife.
They allege that Hayden lured Miller to Western Boulevard with his wife where he was gunned down with an M 16 assault weapon.
But the defense argued that the states evidence wasn’t enough to place Hayden at the crime scene or that he was ever in possession of the weapon.
For Fitta her mind is made up.
“No doubt in my mind,” she said, “we believed it then and we still believe it now.“
But we’ll have to wait until next week to see what a jury decides
